FSSAI License Fee Structure: Understanding the Costs for Food Business Operators

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the apex body responsible for ensuring the safety and standards of food businesses in India. Acquiring an FSSAI license is mandatory for all food business operators (FBOs) in the country. The cost of obtaining this license varies depending on the size and nature of the business. This article will detail the FSSAI license fee structure to help businesses budget for and understand the financial aspect of compliance.

FSSAI License Categories
The FSSAI issues three different types of licenses based on the nature and scale of the business:

Basic Registration: For small-scale food businesses with an annual turnover of up to Rs. 12 lakhs.
State License: For medium-sized food businesses with a turnover between Rs. 12 lakhs to Rs. 20 crores.
Central License: For large food businesses with a turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crores.
Fee Structure
The FSSAI license fee structure is determined by the type of license required and the tenure of the license.

Basic Registration Fee
The fee for basic registration is typically around Rs. 100 per year.
State License Fee
For manufacturers, the fee can range from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 5,000 per year, depending on the capacity.
For food service providers like restaurants and cafes, the fee is generally around Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 5,000 per year.
Central License Fee
For manufacturers, the fee is about Rs. 7,500 per year.
For importers, 100% Export Oriented Units (EOUs), large food businesses, and operators in Central Government agencies, the fee is also set at Rs. 7,500 per year.
Renewal Fee
The renewal fee for the FSSAI license is generally the same as the fee for the initial application.
Late fees may be applicable if the renewal is not completed before the expiry of the current license.
Additional Costs

There may be additional costs for modifications, duplications of the license, or any other regulatory advice sought from experts.

FSSAI offers a concession in the fee for certain categories of FBOs, such as those owned by women entrepreneurs.
Payment Mode

Fees can be paid online via the FSSAI licensing portal or through a demand draft in favor of the ‘Senior Manager, FSSAI’ at the respective regional offices.
Important Considerations

Accuracy in Application: Ensure the accuracy of the application to avoid additional fees for rectification or rejection.
Adherence to Deadlines: Timely renewal avoids late fees and interruptions in business operations.
Compliance with Standards: The fee is a regulatory requirement, but adherence to FSSAI standards is the core objective.
Understanding the FSSAI license fee structure is crucial for food business operators in planning their budget and ensuring compliance with food safety regulations. It is an investment in building a reputable and trustworthy brand that consumers can rely on for safe food consumption. With the knowledge of the fee structure, FBOs can navigate the licensing process with greater ease and clarity, ensuring that they operate within the legal framework established by the FSSAI.,
